Adventures in potty training land

Thanks to my dear friend Betty, I made the rash decision on Thursday night that it was time once and for all tackle potty training in earnest with Kira. No more of this sporadic sitting her on the potty, we were going to go full blown diaper free. Tom was a fan, but he was also quite adamant that she should wear panties and not walk around the house with a bare bottom in her learning period. So we pulled out her new princess "big girl panties" and I let her wear them around the house.

Let me first say, I don't know if this is the best system and if I had to do it over again, I would have started her in the summer but I can't live my life in "what-if's," I can only learn from my mistakes and move forward and keep trying.

So we started her off as soon as she woke up yesterday. Even though we could tell she had peed in her diaper, Tom sat her on the potty anyway as soon as she woke up and she actually peed in there! We gave her a treat of an M&M and praised her up and down for being such a big girl. Then we put her in her big girl panties and the real "fun" began. I let her drink loads of milk and juice all day and set the timer for 30 min intervals. When the timer would go off I would sit her on the potty. Most times she would go. Sometimes she would not. She had two accidents out of the whole day yesterday so I would consider that a good success even though it felt stressful for me.

Now we are on day two and I have switched up my strategy a little. It felt like the timer thing was too rigid for me and was just plain making me crazy so I started keeping track of what she drank and when. Then after about 30-40 min I would start watching her for signs that she had to go. She was doing really well but then she had 3 accidents in a row (although one of those times she did stop herself in the middle and was able to pee the rest of it into the potty so that was the silver lining I clung to in that instance). I was feeling awfully discouraged after this happened because I was really thinking she wasn't getting it when I saw her looking like she wanted to pee. So we went to the potty and she sat there willingly. Within a short time she peed but when I asked her if she was all done she said "no." So I let her sit there while I read her a story from Amelia Bedelia. While I was reading she successfully pooped and was quite pleased with herself for doing so. At this point we are still in the learning process but we not giving up. We are going to venture out to church tomorrow so that should be interesting, I am going to bring two changes of clothes just in case. Those of you with experience in potty training, feel free to leave advice in the comments! ;)

I think it really helps if they don't have underwear on at first. How about putting her in a dress, that way she isn't walking around with just a shirt on? That's just the way I did it anyway.
Oh and I would put a pull-up on her for tomorrow until you have been at it a week. It may be a bit frustrating if she pees on the church carpet and there are so many distractions there that she might not do so well.
Looking forward to hearing the progress!

My only advice is: be patient, Rome wasn't built in a day! It takes time, but she'll eventually be out of diapers for good. All my daughters are successfully potty trained!

Love, MOM

Great job Dawn! and Kira! I know it seems scary at first but you can do it :) I usually try to plan potty training for a week when I don't have to go anywhere and we can stay close to the potty. It sounds like you are getting there though!
